Walkingstick says he plans to call in F.B.I in LaFontaine investigation

by Susie Applegate
In spite of a surprise City Council vote against Council member Willie Walkingstick’s motion to call in the F.B.I. on the LaFontaine investigation, Walkingstick says he plans to go over their heads.
“Sheriff Sweet is stonewalling this investigation,” says Walkingstick, “and I am shocked that the rest of the Council can’t see it. But I have a right, as a private citizen, to request a civil rights investigation. I plan to do that.”
Walkingstick has long claimed that the sheriff has been dragging his feet. Sheriff Sweet had no comment, but fellow Council member Angie Arratola said, “Willie’s heart is in the right place, but the Council does not feel that we can spare anymore resources on a fifty year old murder investigation.”
Mayor Kevin McCoy, however, was not so kind. “Walkingstick has a hair up his ass about Sheriff Sweet. This is a ridiculous waste of time.”
Walkingstick wasn’t fazed by the criticism. “This case is about the very soul of Germaine. Is the mayor saying that saving our soul is a waste of time? It’s time to jump in the creek, and wash ourselves clean of this thing.”

Sheriff questions need for investigation

by Howard Applegate
The bones of Charles Sevigny LaFontaine are contained in a cardboard box on a shelf in the evidence room of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. Whether or not that will remain his resting place for long was the subject of debate between our own Sheriff Sweet and local community leaders.
Although LaFontaine’s remains were found in a dry gulch in Wilbur County, the bones are in temporary custody of Deschutes County. Because Wilbur County has no forensic facilities, the remains were sent to Bend in March to be identified. But further forensics investigation will cost Wilbur County plenty, according to Sheriff Sweet.
“Investigating an old case like this may not be feasible,” Sheriff Sweet commented at a recent Wilbur County Business Association (WCBA) meeting. “Too much time has passed, everyone involved is old or dead. I don’t see how we can ever find out what happened.”
Most present were in agreement, including Vernon Van Bibber, one of Germaine’s longest living residents, and the only one present who actually met LaFontaine.
“It would be a waste of tax dollars, and county resources. It might cost this community more than it can afford,” Van Bibber stated.
    Others disagreed.
“He was murdered, and he deserves our best effort to find out how that happened, just like we would do for anyone else,” Harlan McCoy stated.
Several of those present supported McCoy’s position, but Sheriff Sweet refused to say whether or not he would involve his office in further investigation.

Germaine and Wilbur County News Briefs

Girls Missing at Double-T
Estrella Luna, co-owner of the Double-T Ranch reported to the Sheriff’s Department that two girls from the Juvenile Facility are missing.
According to Luna, they didn’t show up for breakfast call on Sunday morning.
“We checked their rooms,” said Luna, “and they were gone, along with back packs and winter clothing.”
Luna, and her partner, Cedar Ring, believe the girls will try to make their way to Bend, and asked Wilbur County residents to not offer rides to highway 20.
Sheriff’s Deputy Shaun Hinterteil agrees. “These girls may seem innocent, and they might bat their cute little eyelashes at you, but a lot of these kids are here for serious offences which would be felonies if they were adults.”
The girls had been on lockdown for the past week, and were in the news recently after reportedly seeing the Wildman near North Plains Junction. According to Luna, this pair of girls has been particularly troublesome.
As minors the girls’ names have not been released.

Another Kid Missing
Chrissy Plum reported to The Germaine Truth that her young goat, Grendel, has disappeared, and asked local residents to be on the lookout.
Grendel, whom Chrissy labeled “an expert escape artist” vanished overnight on Friday.
The Plums live out near Charlebois Corners. Ten-year old Chrissy’s dad, Ed, is the biology teacher at Old Paiute High School, and is adviser to the 4-H goat club.
